The Water Wars heat up in Maine!

"Defending Water in Maine" takes on Nestle

The water wars are coming to a boil across the country. On one side we have multinational conglomerates out to buy water rights from rural communities. Promising new jobs and new revenue streams, they buy water for fractions of pennies per gallon and sell it for dollars a quart. On the other side, we have communities who are rightfully leery of signing a contract with a huge conglomerate, who see water as a right and not as a commodity, who want to protect their local environment, who know greenwashing when they see it, and also know that hydrology is not an exact science--especially when it's the bottling company hiring the hydrologists!

In Maine, the Defending Water in Maine website will keep you up-to-date on the fight to keep the state's water under responsible, accountable public stewardship. Bookmark the site and check back often for the latest news. And check out this video of a public meeting in Kennebunk on June 22 for commonsense arguments against water sales and a "citizen's-eye-view" of current Nestle operations in Maine.
